How do you get from Izmir Airport to Ayvalik?

From Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport to Ayvalik it is about 170 km, a drive that takes 2–2.5 hours on most days. Leaving the terminal, we cross to the north side of the city and head towards Menemen and Aliaga. Once the turn-offs for Candarli and Dikili are behind us, we near the Balikesir border, pass Altinova and arrive in Ayvalik.

Olive groves cover both sides of the road on the last stretch, and as we get closer to Ayvalik the small islands of the bay come into view. Ayvalik belongs to Balikesir province, yet many people who come here fly into Izmir and cover the rest of the way by road.

Where do people stay in Ayvalik?

Places to stay in Ayvalik are spread over three quite different areas.

In Ayvalik town, the old quarter just behind the seafront is full of 19th-century stone houses and narrow, sometimes steep cobbled lanes. Most boutique hotels and guesthouses are in these restored houses. Cars cannot enter every lane; if your address is on one of them, we use the map pin from your host and stop at the closest point a car can reach.

Cunda (Alibey Island) is linked to the mainland by a road, so we simply drive across. Fish restaurants line its harbour, while hotels and holiday homes are spread around the island’s bays.

Sarimsakli is the long sandy beach south of the town centre, lined with hotels and holiday flats. Seytan Sofrasi, the hilltop known for its sunsets, is on this side too.

Ayvalik, Cunda, Sarimsakli or Altinova?

In Ayvalik, an address does not always show exactly where a place is.

Cunda and Sarimsakli are both part of Ayvalik, and hotel addresses there often just say “Ayvalik”. The fare on this page covers Ayvalik town, Cunda and Sarimsakli.

Altinova also belongs to the Ayvalik district, but it lies further south, before the town when you come from Izmir, and it has its own fare. Burhaniye, a little further north on the Edremit Gulf, has a separate route as well.
