How do you get from Izmir Airport to Cesme?

From Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB) to Cesme we have a drive of about 95 km, which takes 1 hour on most days. After leaving the airport we take the Izmir ring road round to the west of the city and join the Izmir–Cesme motorway. Almost the whole journey is on this motorway. Once Urla is behind us, we cross the middle of the peninsula, pass the Alacati exit and drop down into Cesme.

After Urla the road runs between olive groves and low hills. As we get closer to the tip of the peninsula, the sea comes back into view, and shortly afterwards we reach Cesme.

In summer, especially on Friday evenings and before public holidays, the motorway can get busy. If you have a ferry to Chios or a boat leaving from the marina, add the departure time to your booking; we look at your landing time and the traffic together and plan the drive around it.

Where do people stay in Cesme?

Cesme is a district spread over several bays rather than a single town, so where you stay depends a little on the kind of holiday you have in mind.

In Cesme town the castle, the old caravanserai, the bazaar and the harbour are all within walking distance of one another. People who want to stroll along the seafront in the evening and eat at the fish restaurants usually choose the small hotels and guesthouses here. Cesme Marina is in the town as well, right beside the castle.

Ilica is known for its long, shallow sandy beach and its thermal water. Most of the larger hotels are on this stretch of coast, and families with young children often pick it because the sea gets deep only gradually. Boyalik, the bay between the town and Ilica, is quieter, with hotels and holiday estates side by side.

If this is your first time in Cesme, the area around the castle, the caravanserai and the Church of Ayios Haralambos can all be explored on foot in the town. People planning a day trip to Chios often stay in the town or in Boyalik, because being close to the port makes it easier to catch the ferry.

Cesme, Alacati and the villages around them

This is where the names can get a little confusing.

Alacati, Dalyan, Ildir, Ciftlikkoy and Pasalimani all belong to the Cesme district, so some hotel and holiday-home addresses simply say “Cesme”. Each of these places has its own route page and fare, though. Alacati, known for its stone houses and windsurfing, is a separate town with its own motorway exit. Dalyan is the old fishing village just north of the town – not the Dalyan in Mugla. Ildir lies in the north-east of the peninsula, next to the ruins of ancient Erythrai.

Return from Cesme to Izmir Airport

For the way back we pick you up where you are staying: at the hotel entrance in Ilica, at the estate gate in Boyalik, or outside your hotel or guesthouse in the town. If you are coming back to Cesme Marina by boat or arriving on the ferry from Chios, we can also meet you at the marina or the port.
